Reluctantly, I give this protein a 5 star rating, March 5, 2013

I started this review at 2 stars, but have since decided to tell you that I really do like this protein. You must realize that compared to other hemp proteins that I have tried, this hemp protein is by far the best. In general, hemp protein is a disgusting, gritty mess. Glory be to the brave people who mix hemp protein with water and drink it. I would rather mix beach sand with water and drink that. It would taste a bit more savory. Here is why Hemp Pro 70 is superior. First, it IS slightly less gritty than other hemp proteins even from this same manufacturer. Second, when mixing this protein with other ingredients, you DO have the ability to mask the fact that hemp protein is actually in your shake! Here is what I mean. I mixed 3 tablespoons of Hemp Pro 70 with 1 cup spinach, 2 cups kale greens, 1 tsp cinnamon, a small amount of fresh ginger, 1 tbsp peanut butter and plenty of cold water and I have a super powerful healthy lunch. I think the Canadians will figure out how to make hemp protein delicious one day, but this is best of class right now. My digestion of this protein is fantastic! I can’t take whey protein anymore; it does not agree with my digestive track. Hemp protein is a "complete" protein. It most closely resembles the animal version of protein but is every bit vegan. Hemp protein is easily digested and does not produce gas. I know this because I stay full long after eating this protein and I don’t feel stuffed. I always feel spry after the aforementioned shake.

Great source of lean protein, February 13, 2011

This review is from: Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro 70 Protein Supplement, 16 Ounce (Grocery)

Perhaps the purest source of protein (70% of each serving is pure protein) that I’ve found out there. And for the health-conscious, it has very few ingredients (“hemp protein concentrate + natural plant extracts”) so there’s really no filler or crap. It’s made from ground hemp seed which has had the liquid pressed out of it and then the fiber removed so it is as high a concentration of protein as can be. Be aware: if you use a lot and don’t get a decent amount of fiber and water, it could cause minor constipation since it’s water-soluble. Normally, this is not a problem. It’s great to have a plant-based, non-hydrolyzed, sustainable protein source for building lean muscle.

Taste is okay. I can drink it straight mixed with water, but I’m normally downing it in one or two gulps. I love mixing it with oatmeal – doesn’t really throw off the taste, but does give it a slight green tint – and putting it in smoothies. Mix it with berries and juices you love, you’ll never know it was there!

It is a bit pricey. I can get a decent deal when it’s on sale at my local health food store, but it’s cheapest bought directly from Manitoba Harvest’s website. You can buy it in bulk there!

Recommended.

As far as taste, what can we ask for? Plain with milk it’s only passable. But heck, it’s a hemp protein. Now there are ways of making it taste better and it’s a nutritious product. Not too shabby is adding about a half of a decent sized frozen banana (a natural sweetener, thickener, and flavoring) to 8 oz of milk (I use organic fat free milk) to 3 tablespoons of the product. This tasted pretty good, and I would have no problem drinking it like this every day. So what I am saying is that for products like these that don’t taste like a Steak and Shake milkshake or a Wendy’s Frosty, one would need to experiment to find something that is suitable as far as taste to the consumer. I did think about giving four stars for taste, but it’s not god awful and can be gotten around with a little creativity. Plus we are dealing with hemp here so I don’t think it would be fair. This is the first hemp protein I have tried so maybe there are better tasting ones out there. However, since I like the way I made it above with the banana and may be able to find other good tasting concoctions, I may be just running risk and find something worse by seeking elsewhere. If I were to stick with this one, and I may, the bottom line then becomes final price. I am not a pure vegan although I do restrict meat intake and usually stick to salmon and chicken breasts when I do eat meat. So I use a supplement like this to fill in days when I don’t get enough protein from animal products. I won’t eat soy protein, trace amounts notwithstanding, and I would not put Splenda or sucralose (poison) in my system so I needed an alternative protein shake/smoothy. All the regular good tasting standard bodybuilding proteins use sucralose to sweeten them. Well, the ones I like and have used anyway. Even these latter mentioned ones that have the best relative taste, don’t taste like an unhealthy milkshake anyway.

Update 3/14/2012: Ok this is how I drink it now, and I love it. 8 oz of Pacific Brand organic oat non-dairy beverage (any kind of milk such as hemp, almond, or soy can be used), 1 medium banana, 1/2 cup of raw organic oatmeal (we buy this in the bulk section at Whole Foods), 4 tablespoons of this Hemp Protein, 1 packet of Sweet Leaf Stevia. This is my breakfast every other day. One can add a tablespoon of organic freshly ground (at the store which make it nothing but ground nuts) nut butter if you are not too worried about fat. To me the oatmeal really makes it great.
