Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

This review is from: Paleo Magazine Readers’ Favorites Cookbook: Favorites Paleo, Primal and Grain-Free Recipes (Paperback)

I wanted to talk a bit about how this book is organized, in case anyone is interested.
The first thing you will see upon opening the book is a glorious two page spread of some of the food you can make from this book. (they look so good you want to eat the paper it’s printed on).

The first 4 chapters of the book discuss the Paleo diet, the history of agriculture, a bit about food in general, and why we should eat this way. Good for the newbie. The recipes themselves start on page 54.

While there is a short table of contents (text), it’s the next two page spread you want – a thumbnail picture table of contents. More fantastic pictures right at your finger tips. They are listed in this order on those 2 pages: Breakfasts, Entrees, Sides, Sauces/Dips/Dressings, Baking/Desserts/Snacks/Beverages.
Close inspection shows that the page numbers listed on each thumbnail are all over the place. That’s because they aren’t together in the book.
The recipes from the chapter called “Favorite Recipes from Paleo Magazine” are put in the book in alphabetical order by the recipe name. You’ll see scones, a smoothie, a soup, and meatballs all in a row because of their title.

Page 88 is where submitted recipes start. The back of the book says “…over 55 recipes from members of the Paleo community”. I can not for the life of me figure out how that section is actually organized. It’s not alphabetical by recipe name, or even alphabetical by contributors name. You’ll see an omelet, Zucchini pasta, rabbit skewers, and a cake all in a row.
So I am very thankful for the thumbnail picture table of contents.

The index in the back is an Ingredient Index which I don’t care for. You’ll see things like:
Lemons 56, 68, 95, 107, 119, 127, 133, 143, 155, 161
If you have some lemons sitting on your counter, you have to flip to all those pages to see if you want to make that particular recipe or not. For example, one uses lemons for Baba Ghanoush, one is a Kale salad, and one is for mayo, but of course you can’t tell unless you flip to those pages, or tediously scan the thumbnail table of contents for that page number.
So I just skip the Ingredient Index all together, really.

This book is so beautiful it can qualify as a “Coffee Table Book”. And the recipes look so creative and delicious that I can forgive the odd organization.

So there you have it – my review on how this book is organized. Happy eating!

So proud to be a contributor to this amazing book!, November 8, 2013

This review is from: Paleo Magazine Readers’ Favorites Cookbook: Favorites Paleo, Primal and Grain-Free Recipes (Paperback)

This is such a gorgeous cookbook, full of tempting recipes and inspiring stories. It features some of Paleo Magazine’s most popular published recipes, and then contributions from paleo chefs and bloggers. Each contributor’s recipe is accompanied by an interesting bio and photos; it’s so nice to discover new sources for tasty paleo fare, and to learn more about how and why so many people have flourished following the lifestyle.

The book’s photography is top-notch, and it’s a nice, functional size (easy to use when cooking in the kitchen!). So far I’ve already made 3 recipes from the book, and all were winners. None of the dishes include obscure or terribly hard-to-find items, particularly if you’re already following a grain and dairy-free diet.

Can’t recommend this one enough!
