Reluctantly, I give this protein a 5 star rating, March 5, 2013

This review is from: Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro 70 Protein Supplement, 16 Ounce (Grocery)

I started this review at 2 stars, but have since decided to tell you that I really do like this protein. You must realize that compared to other hemp proteins that I have tried, this hemp protein is by far the best. In general, hemp protein is a disgusting, gritty mess. Glory be to the brave people who mix hemp protein with water and drink it. I would rather mix beach sand with water and drink that. It would taste a bit more savory. Here is why Hemp Pro 70 is superior. First, it IS slightly less gritty than other hemp proteins even from this same manufacturer. Second, when mixing this protein with other ingredients, you DO have the ability to mask the fact that hemp protein is actually in your shake! Here is what I mean. I mixed 3 tablespoons of Hemp Pro 70 with 1 cup spinach, 2 cups kale greens, 1 tsp cinnamon, a small amount of fresh ginger, 1 tbsp peanut butter and plenty of cold water and I have a super powerful healthy lunch. I think the Canadians will figure out how to make hemp protein delicious one day, but this is best of class right now. My digestion of this protein is fantastic! I can’t take whey protein anymore; it does not agree with my digestive track. Hemp protein is a "complete" protein. It most closely resembles the animal version of protein but is every bit vegan. Hemp protein is easily digested and does not produce gas. I know this because I stay full long after eating this protein and I don’t feel stuffed. I always feel spry after the aforementioned shake.

Great source of lean protein, February 13, 2011

This review is from: Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro 70 Protein Supplement, 16 Ounce (Grocery)

Perhaps the purest source of protein (70% of each serving is pure protein) that I’ve found out there. And for the health-conscious, it has very few ingredients (“hemp protein concentrate + natural plant extracts”) so there’s really no filler or crap. It’s made from ground hemp seed which has had the liquid pressed out of it and then the fiber removed so it is as high a concentration of protein as can be. Be aware: if you use a lot and don’t get a decent amount of fiber and water, it could cause minor constipation since it’s water-soluble. Normally, this is not a problem. It’s great to have a plant-based, non-hydrolyzed, sustainable protein source for building lean muscle.

Taste is okay. I can drink it straight mixed with water, but I’m normally downing it in one or two gulps. I love mixing it with oatmeal – doesn’t really throw off the taste, but does give it a slight green tint – and putting it in smoothies. Mix it with berries and juices you love, you’ll never know it was there!

It is a bit pricey. I can get a decent deal when it’s on sale at my local health food store, but it’s cheapest bought directly from Manitoba Harvest’s website. You can buy it in bulk there!

Recommended.

The taste… well it may take some creativity, April 26, 2011

As far as taste, what can we ask for? Plain with milk it’s only passable. But heck, it’s a hemp protein. Now there are ways of making it taste better and it’s a nutritious product. Not too shabby is adding about a half of a decent sized frozen banana (a natural sweetener, thickener, and flavoring) to 8 oz of milk (I use organic fat free milk) to 3 tablespoons of the product. This tasted pretty good, and I would have no problem drinking it like this every day. So what I am saying is that for products like these that don’t taste like a Steak and Shake milkshake or a Wendy’s Frosty, one would need to experiment to find something that is suitable as far as taste to the consumer. I did think about giving four stars for taste, but it’s not god awful and can be gotten around with a little creativity. Plus we are dealing with hemp here so I don’t think it would be fair. This is the first hemp protein I have tried so maybe there are better tasting ones out there. However, since I like the way I made it above with the banana and may be able to find other good tasting concoctions, I may be just running risk and find something worse by seeking elsewhere. If I were to stick with this one, and I may, the bottom line then becomes final price. I am not a pure vegan although I do restrict meat intake and usually stick to salmon and chicken breasts when I do eat meat. So I use a supplement like this to fill in days when I don’t get enough protein from animal products. I won’t eat soy protein, trace amounts notwithstanding, and I would not put Splenda or sucralose (poison) in my system so I needed an alternative protein shake/smoothy. All the regular good tasting standard bodybuilding proteins use sucralose to sweeten them. Well, the ones I like and have used anyway. Even these latter mentioned ones that have the best relative taste, don’t taste like an unhealthy milkshake anyway.

Update 3/14/2012: Ok this is how I drink it now, and I love it. 8 oz of Pacific Brand organic oat non-dairy beverage (any kind of milk such as hemp, almond, or soy can be used), 1 medium banana, 1/2 cup of raw organic oatmeal (we buy this in the bulk section at Whole Foods), 4 tablespoons of this Hemp Protein, 1 packet of Sweet Leaf Stevia. This is my breakfast every other day. One can add a tablespoon of organic freshly ground (at the store which make it nothing but ground nuts) nut butter if you are not too worried about fat. To me the oatmeal really makes it great.

Keto Clarity: Your Definitive Guide to the Benefits of a Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet

Keto Clarity: Your Definitive Guide to the Benefits of a Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet

Leading health blogger Jimmy Moore and researcher and internist Dr. Eric C. Westman join forces again to explain the powerful therapeutic effects of a ketogenic diet–one that combines a customized carbohydrate restriction, moderation of protein intake, and real food-based fats–which is emerging in the scientific literature as a means for improving a wide range of diseases, from Type 2 diabetes to Alzheimer’s and more. Simply eating a low-carb diet alone isn’t enough, and Moore and Westman tell

Clarifying the need for you to read Keto Clarity!, August 14, 2014

By

docfor ME (Freeport, Maine) – See all my reviews

Why did Jimmy Moore and Eric Westman feel the need to produce Keto Clarity? Do we REALLY need another book about ketogenic diets?

Maybe they know that there are many people out there who think that the best a ketogenic diet can do is to cause bad breath, and at worst– raise your cholesterol and risk of heart disease, and lead to fatal ketoacidosis.

Others have heard that a ketogenic diet is only useful for treating seizures in young children, and that it doesn’t work at all for obesity or diabetes in adults. The common belief is that we ALL need to follow a low fat or vegetarian diet in order to stay healthy.

Not so!

As a cardiologist I find a role for the low carbohydrate diet to reduce inflammation, shift small dense LDL to a less atherogenic pattern, and to reduce “risk factors” of obesity, high blood glucose, diabetes, and elevated blood pressure. It is the ketone that plays a role in the nutrigenomic "turn on" as well as the metabolic efficiency.

When I wear my "exercise physiologist" hat I have discovered the benefits of the ketoadaptive state for endurance training and competition.

And then as a nutritionist I have found the effectiveness of a low carbohydrate ketogenic diet for treating many disorders from Autism to Alzheimer’s. The properly formulated ketogenic diet can reduce seizures in children and increase fertility for hopeful parents-to-be. And for certain pregnant patients with gestational diabetes, or outright clinical type 1 or type 2 diabetes, there is also potential benefit to the mother and fetus. Now the ketogenic diet is being looked at as another therapeutic modality to prevent, retard, and maybe even cure some forms of cancer.

What is the difference between ketoacidosis, starvation ketosis, and nutritional ketogenesis? What are these ketone bodies? How do we make them? How do we get them? How do we measure them? And, just what do they do?

Keto Clarity provides the answers. Understanding these distinctions allows the practitioner to serve his patients with an expanded spectrum of nutritional therapies, and gives many discouraged, obese, tired, and depressed patients new hope.

Keto Clarity should be a required read for physicians and registered dieticians, and is highly recommended for all health care providers, patients, and anyone curious about nutrition.

The unique format of scientific fact, practical clinical pearls with technical tips, and patient commentary provides the full spectrum of information needed to prescribe and/or practice a low carbohydrate, ketoadaptive lifestyle, for disease resolution or health.

Jimmy Does it Again! A Must-Read for the Experts to the Novice., August 5, 2014

I was trying to think of flowery things to say but come on! This book is just THE BOMB! I read it as someone who has learned A LOT about Nutritional Ketosis by following Jimmy and some of the doctors and other experts who contributed to this book. I loved that it wasn’t just a “been there, heard that” overview of Ketosis and what it can do for us. Jimmy and Dr. Westman manage to go deeper into the science for us while still bringing it around for the lay person or novice. I used to regularly test my blood ketones/mmols but the book moved me to go bust out my glucometer that has been gathering dust for a while. His step by step instructions on how to find your own thresholds for carbs and protein just got me all fired up again and will help me in my hacking pursuits. I’m no expert, I’m a soccer mom/school teacher, bio-hacker wannabe. This book is perfect for me because it clears up why some of my earnest efforts were not getting me the results I expected. It is also perfect for that family member or friend who is trying that Low Fat diet (with poor results) and doesn’t understand what you are doing and doesn’t really want to hear your explanations. The gift of this book to that person is a great, non-threating way to help them in their journey. As a teacher, I love a reference read that is not so dang dry!! Jimmy’s personality comes through to make this an easy, enjoyable read. BONUS: if you get the audio version, Jimmy is the one who does the reading. That’s kind of rare!

This is what the title says – the definitive guide to a low-carb, high-fat diet, August 5, 2014

There’s a book called "The man who mistook his wife for a hat" and you just think – what on earth is that about? You don’t have this worry with a Jimmy Moore/Eric Westman collaboration – the book is exactly what it says on the cover: the definitive guide to the benefits of a low-carb, high-fat diet.

Keto Clarity follows the super reader friendly format of Cholesterol Clarity. Jimmy does what he does best – interview experts (22 this time) and then share their insights, as he and Eric navigate you through everything you could ever want to know about ketosis…

What is ketosis? Why would you want to be in ketosis? How do you know when you’re in ketosis? What’s the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis? How can you find your carb tolerance level? What’s the right protein level for you? What about Intermittent Fasting? What are the five mistakes that low carb enthusiasts most often make? What are the top 10 things to check if you’re not staying in ketosis?

The book format is just so readable and memorable. There are doctors notes throughout and ‘box outs’ to clarify points. The chapter summaries are so useful as a reminder of what has just been covered and they provide great check-backs for future reference.
There’s a handy KETO acronym to keep you on track: Keep carbs low; Eat more fat; Test Ketones often; Overdoing protein is bad. There is also a frequently asked questions section, so that you can see others have the same questions and there’s a success stories chapter, so that you can see the experience of other people.

With Dr William Davis and Dr David Perlmutter on the panel, you know you’ve got carbohydrate covered from a body and brain perspective. And as another expert, Dr Richard Feinman, understates "A high-fat diet in the presence of carbohydrate is different than a high-fat diet in the presence of low carbohydrate." And then some!

If you’ve ever wondered what this whole ketosis concept is all about, this is the only book you need. Jimmy and Eric have sorted it for you.
